Saravanan Chockalingam is a self-taught contemporary figurative and expressionist painter and photographer from India. Born in Tamil Nadu near Madurai—one of the country’s most ancient temple cities—his artistic language is deeply informed by the region’s sculptural and cultural legacy.
Growing up amidst temples adorned with finely carved stone figures, Saravanan developed an early sensitivity to form, proportion, and emotional articulation. The rhythmic precision and expressive intensity of these sculptures continue to influence his work, guiding his exploration of the human condition—its sensuality and vulnerability, love and violence, despair and resilience, birth and mortality.
